Art, Communal spaces and places, Global ideas, Protest and activism
Description

In 1997 in the country of Lithuania, the residents of the area declared the Republic of Užupis, along with its own flag, currency, president, cabinet of ministers, a constitution written by Romas Lileikis and Thomas Chepaitis, an anthem, and an army (numbering approximately 11 men). They celebrate this independence annually on Užupis Day, which falls on April 1st. Perhaps the date is not a coincidence? A place for artists and dreamers.

Germany has an interesting, vibrant tradition of intentional communities and squats utilising/re-building old railway wagons and similar. Sometimes referred to as ‘mobile home squats’. Links also with 'party' and sound systems and activism.

Here are links to a couple of interesting pieces and pics. Also links to other articles from within Nicolette Stewart’s blog. And a great film about the residents at Freiburg.

World Passport

World Passport
Name
World Passport
Category
Global ideas, Human Rights, Nomadic Travellers, Protest and activism
Description

Originated in 1948 by Garry Davis, a former Broadway actor and a former World War II bomber pilot, who renounced his US citizenship and declared himself a "citizen of the world." In 1953 in Ellworth, Maine, Davis declared the founding of the World Government of World Citizens.

The world passport is a machine readable travel document that resembles traditional passports issued by most nations of the world. The passports are now administered by a Washington-based non-profit called the World Service Authority. The Authority says the world passport represents the "inalienable human right of freedom of travel on planet Earth."

Find out more…but expect to be challenged and even locked up if you try using one!

World Without Borders

World Without Borders
Name
World Without Borders
Category
Art, Global ideas, Human Rights, Protest and activism
Description

Founded by Russian, Andrey Kiselev who was born in Moscow in March 1977. He is now based in Portugal but travelling around the globe on research.

The WWb Foundation states that:

‘As a contemporary and inclusive humanitarian institution, the WWb Foundation believes it can truly make a difference in the establishment of a broader communication that can disseminate knowledge and promote harmony between people. As a non profitable organization, it recognizes that its goals can’t be achieved unilaterally. That is why the foundation places a strong emphasis on working in partnership with government agencies and private organizations, positioning itself as a catalyst - meaning it provides the tools, the programs, and the funding to help others overthrow the frontiers of knowledge and to provide fundamental progress in social, environmental, cultural, artistic and sportive areas.’

It offers some ideas about boundaries, arts, travel and how we might change the 'mindset' of people across the globe away from territorialism

The site looks as though it is a positive force, but from the UK, at least, a lot of the links are not working. Links here to their main site and Facebook page.

About

We aim to incorporate:

– an ideas exchange – with various forums for discussion and debate
– resources sections with hyperlinks and actual information material. Potentially an online library with links to specific resources and publications, images, videos, and
– a 'web of hubs’ to sites, organisations and individuals around the world.
It’s a bold dream…we hope you and friends will help it grow…
